Suspected Schmallenberg disease in cattle in Powys

We were called to two calvings with deformed calves this week, and both looked typical of Schmallenberg virus (SBV). It is unfortunately quite likely that we are going to see more in the next month or so - please take extra care when putting your hand in cows struggling to calve, remember to check whether the calf feels deformed, and if it does don't pull, call the vet. In most cases, a caesarean section will be required, but a successful caesarean is a better outcome than a dead cow.
